The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia (JHSNS)
is seeking dedicated individuals to join its volunteer Board of Directors. JHSNS advances social justice and public safety by supporting people involved with the criminal justice system and advocating for fair, humane, and effective justice policies.
Board members provide strategic leadership, governance, and oversight to support this mission
Roles and Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction and organizational oversight
Support advocacy aligned with JHSNS’s mission and values
Ensure accountability, sustainability, and strong governance
Foster a respectful, collaborative Board culture
Desired Experience and Attributes
Professional experience and sound judgment in strategic decision-making
Commitment to social justice, equity, and advocacy
Understanding of systemic issues affecting marginalized and over‑represented communities
Ability to contribute effectively at a governance level
Previous board experience is an asset but not a requirement. Lived experience and community leadership, and diverse perspectives are highly valued
The Board meets monthly, with committee meetings as needed.
